Jenny Hobgood is the choral director at South Granville High School in Creedmoor. A proud North Carolina native, she holds both a Bachelor of Music in Performance and a Master of Arts in Teaching from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Since beginning her teaching career in 2000, she has taught general music and chorus at the elementary, middle, and high school levels across Durham, Wake, and Granville counties.
Mrs. Hobgood currently serves as the Show Choir Repertoire & Resources Chair for North Carolina American Choral Directors Association. At South Granville, she directs the show choir Shades of Blue, which earned third place at the North Carolina Association for Scholastic Activities Show Choir Competition in both 2024 and 2025, as well as the Best Choreography award in 2025. Her traditional choral ensemble, Viking Voices, consistently participates in Music Performance Adjudication annually in both performance and sight-reading. South Granville will launch the inaugural NC Show Choir Showcase in March 2027, welcoming groups from across North Carolina and surrounding states.
Mrs. Hobgood is passionate about building student ownership and individual growth within the choral classroom through practical, student-centered assessment and reflection strategies.
In addition to her work in music education, she remains active as a performer and church musician. She returned to the stage in 2023 as “Madame” in Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella with Henderson Rec Players and most recently performed in the ensemble of Big Fish. She also serves as interim worship leader at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Creedmoor.
Outside the classroom, Jenny enjoys spending time with her husband, Mike, and their three children: Drew, Ella, and Jake.
This session explores practical, student-centered strategies for fostering individual growth, reflection, and ownership in the middle and high school choral classroom from the first week of the semester through final assessment. Participants will explore adaptable tools including vocal growth tracking, reflective listening strategies connected to Music Performance Adjudication feedback, student goal-setting, and choice-based final assessments that encourage singers to take an active role in their musical development. Through real classroom examples, student data, and collaborative reflection practices, this session demonstrates how consistent systems of assessment and student voice can strengthen musicianship, increase engagement, and build a more responsive and empowered choral community.
